FOOD INDUSTRY

The wastewater discharged from food processing accounts for large proportion of total water use and worsened water quality results in environmental pollution. The wastewater of food industry comes mainly from the productions of monosodium glutamate, alcohol and brewing, the processing of soybean, grist, fruit and vegetable, meatpacking, milk and beverage on site.

Despite the efforts to reduce its water consumption, the food industry still requires large amounts of water. Membrane processes have established themselves in the food industry at the beginning of the water loop for preparation of the intake water and at the end water loop for recovery and final treatment of the water.

Membrane processes are also widely used in the post-treatment of different water streams for recycling or discharge. If valuable components are present, membrane process can initially be used for the recovery of the components, e.g.ultrafiltration can be applied to recover vegetable proteins or RO for the concentration of sugars from sweet waters.
